Students’ Knowledge Evaluation of the Discipline "Foreign Languages"

at a Technical University

One of the leading tendencies of the higher education modernization in Russia taking place on the background of our entry into the world educational space is concentrating attention on the problem of educational quality improvement. Within the framework of educational space of Russia it is connected, first of all, with the necessity to ensure the uniform standard of educational quality. The concept of the Russian education modernization for the period till 2010 has defined the preparation of a qualified worker, who is competent, responsible, freely operates his/her profession, ready for the constant professional growth, social and professional mobility” as the priority purpose. The realization of the named global purpose is impossible without the complex decision of a successive educational tasks sequence, each of which is aimed at raising the intensity of a certain component of educational process. In connection with the above mentioned purpose the teachers and lectures of the Russian institutes and universities should set the following tasks:

  1. It is necessary to update the existing programs for all educational disciplines at the universities and institutes and in this connection to correct the existing curriculum for those disciplines;

  2. It is necessary to change the qualifying requirements to university graduates in view of the accepted test units;

  3. It is necessary to reconsider the rules of the rating knowledge estimation system, and also to change the rating instructions for all educational disciplines.

In this connection the problem of the students’ knowledge evaluation is urgent nowadays. Evaluation is the major component of the educational process, and it’s impossible to secure efficient education without it. The problem of evaluation is important because according to the Bologna’s convention, which will allow Russia to join the uniform European educational space, till 2010 the students knowledge estimation system should be comparable with the European system and the system of credits as a means of students mobility should be accepted in our country. The increase of mobility means to secure free motion and dialogue among representatives of the different countries. At the current stage of the modern society’s development the professional mobility is impossible without fluent foreign language speaking. Multileveled structure of the discipline "Foreign Languages" realized at the department of Foreign languages of Taganrog Institute of Technology of Southern Federal University is divided into 1) bachelor, 2) master and 3) post- graduate. The main aim of this structure is to create for the students opportunities to develop their knowledge of language in order to make use of this knowledge in the professional career. This structure is realized on the basis of system and person oriented approach.

In conclusion let's sum up the requirements for the technical university students after they graduat from the foreign language study course. After a course of study a student should be able: to have idiomatically correct speech, and also to master the neutral scientific statement style; to use skills of everyday speech (standard pronunciation and rhythm) and to use it in a everyday dialogues; to understand oral (monologue and dialogic) speech on everyday and special topics; to use basic grammatical phenomena, characteristic of professional speech; to know the basic language lexicon, representing neutral scientific style, and also the basic terminology of his/ her professional sphere; to read and to understand with a dictionary special literature on the wide and narrow specialty's profile; to write messages and reports (with preliminary preparation); to participate in discussion of the topics, connected with his/her specialty (to be able to ask questions and to answer them); to have basic writing skills necessary for publications, theses preparation and correspondence; to have basic skills of annotating and special literature translation.
